UK retail giant Tesco today (5 December) opened its 100th Kipa store in Turkey.

The hypermarket was opened in the costal town of Yalova, where Tesco has invested GBP22m (US$32.3m) in the construction of a shopping mall.

A spokesperson for the UK retailer told just-food that the opening was an “important milestone” that marked the company’s 750th store in Central and Eastern Europe.

Tesco has expanded rapidly in the Turkey after it acquired a chain of five Kipa hypermarkets in 2003. It also operates 58 Express convenience stores in Turkey.

“By working with world class local managers, staff and suppliers Tesco has come up with a unique formula which is proving hugely successful with customers,” the company said.

Tesco operates in 12 markets outside the UK: Republic of Ireland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Turkey, Malaysia, South Korea, Thailand, China, Japan and the US.
