Unilever is to build its second ice cream factory in Turkey as it looks to further tap into increasing consumption in the country.

The plant, to be located in Konya in southern Turkey, is projected to be open next May, Unilever told just-food.

The consumer goods giant, the world’s largest ice cream maker, is spending US$100m on the facility, which will initiall have a production capacity of 100m litres and employ around 300 staff. However, the company is eyeing a potential doubling of capacity at the site.

In 1990, when Unilever first started manufacturing ice cream in Turkey, per capita consumption was 0.3 litres a year, a spokesperson said. Today, it is four litres per person and the spokesperson said Unilever believed growth would continue.

“We believe in the growth of the market with our investments and hence we are evaluating the second ice cream factory investment with this long-term approach,” the spokesperson said.
