Tyson Foods names Justin Whitmore first chief sustainability officer

US meat giant Tyson Foods has named Justin Whitmore as its first chief sustainability officer, as part of moves to put “sustainability at the centre of the company’s future plans”.

Whitmore, whose appointment is effective from 1 May, was most recently a consultant at McKinsey & Company, Tyson said. He will be part of the company’s enterprise leadership team, reporting directly to president and CEO Tom Hayes.

Tyson said yesterday (20 April) “Whitmore’s experience consulting on strategy, operations and sustainability for food processing, consumer packaged goods and foodservice companies is expected to serve him well in his new role”.

Whitmore “will provide leadership and direction that helps the company achieve its strategic intent of sustainably feeding the world with the fastest growing portfolio of protein packed brands”, Tyson said. “Under Whitmore’s leadership, the company will strive to innovate and simultaneously deliver healthier food, healthier animals, a healthier environment and a healthier workplace.”

In October, Tyson said it was investing in fledgling US meat-free business Beyond Meat.

Earlier this year, Tyson announced plans for all of its chicken products sold under its namesake brand in US retail stores to be made without the use of antibiotics.
