As consumer concerns surrounding bird flu drive the price of poultry meat down in the UAE, it is having the reverse effect on the price of eggs, which has risen between 25% and 30% in the last week.

The increase follows the government’s decision to halt the import of poultry products from India, according to a report by Gulf News.

“Prices are expected to be higher if action is not taken by the authorities and importers together,” Sangam Sheth, GM of regional poultry import and distribution company Farm Fresh, told Gulf News.

Sheth added that the market could face a shortage of 57m eggs per month until the ban is lifted, because local production is lower than consumption.
