A freak tidal surge which killed 700,000 chickens on two Lincolnshire poultry farms has cost the 2 Sisters Food Group GBP500,000 (US$815,000) in damages.
A storm last month hit Ogg Farm and Winteringham Farm and forced staff to relocate to other 2 Sisters Food Group sites.
“Both farm managers have been relocated due to their bungalows being unfit to live in and staff on the two farms have been found employment within the group until the farms are back up and running again,” said a spokesperson for the group when approached by just-food.
Ogg Farm is expected to be restocked in six to nine months but Winteringham Farm faces a more severe situation.
“Structurally the houses are unsafe and the floors are now cracking, so whilst no decision has yet been taken it looks like a total rebuild,” said the spokesperson.
“It looks like it’s going to be at least a year before both farms are fully up and running again,” he added.
