Analysts at brokerage firm Bernstein today (12 June) suggested that there is a 60-70% chance that a takeover bid could be launched for Cadbury Schweppes after it seperates its US drinks and confectionery businesses.

Speculation has centred on the possibility that US rivals Kraft or Hershey could come forward as possible bidders, while chewing gum giant Wrigley is also viewed as a prospective predator.

However, when contacted by just-food Cadbury refused to be drawn on the issue, stating that the rumours were “purely speculative”.

Announcing the decision to separate its US drinks and confectionery businesses, Cadbury said that the move would allow it to focus on its core confectionery unit. The UK confectionery group is gearing up to release further information on its strategic overhaul in the coming week.
