A group of scientists at Nottingham University in the UK have discovered that eating apples and tomatoes can promote healthy lungs, and the alleviation of several breathing disorders and lung diseases, such as asthma.

By pinpointing the extra benefits of tomatoes and apples, the study builds on the long-standing knowledge that fresh fruit can reduce the risk of asthma and chronic lung diseases.

Presenting their research to the annual conference of the American Thoracic Society, the researchers explained that 2,633 adults who had known lung complaints were asked to take a test to measure their lung capacity. The scientists also asked questions about their diet and discovered that those with the greatest capacity ate more than five apples every week. Those people also ate tomatoes at least once every two days.

The scientists explained that apples contain high levels of quercetin, an antioxidant flavonoid that is thought to protect the lungs from cigarette smoke and other environmental pollutants. Quercetin is also found in high levels in tea, red wine and onions.
