Asda saw like-for-like sales rise in the fourth quarter of its fiscal year, which the UK’s number two retailer attributed to its promotional work and a “significant improvement” in the quality of its food.
Wal-Mart Stores’ UK subsidiary today (22 February) recorded a 1.6% like-for-like sales increase, excluding VAT and fuel, for the quarter ended 31 January.
The supermarket chain said that its premium private-label range, Extra Special, became the fastest growing premium brand in the market over the quarter. Asda pointed to sales of its Extra Special Wyke Farm Cheddar increasing ten-fold, and sales of its Extra Special 28-day matured beef joint more than trebling.
It said that its recently relaunched standard private-label, Chosen By You, has gone from “strength-to-strength” since it was launched in late September. It has introduced nearly 3,000 products into the range and plans to introduce 2,500 more lines.
Asda president and CEO Andy Clarke said: “I’m pleased with the progress we’ve made in the last six months. We have successfully extended our price gap to 10%, significantly improved the quality of our food across the entire store, and given our customers even better service.”
The company highlighted the success of its Asda Price Guarantee, saying that the number of customers comparing the price of their groceries online has “dramatically increased” since the start of the year, with 800,000 people using the tool, and nearly 170,000 downloading the iPhone app.
