UK turkey producer Bernard Matthews has announced plans to cut 130 jobs at its Norfolk production facility.

The company said today (15 January) that 35 administrative positions were to be eliminated while 95 processing jobs will be cut.

“This action is a consequence of the challenging economic climate that has resulted in increased price sensitivity, a need to lower costs to remain competitive and less people leaving the business in a very depressed labour market,” Noel Bartram, Bernard Matthews Farms chief executive, said.

“Whilst our focus on British turkey farming and the new product launches in 2008 stand us in good stead, our number one priority is the long-term sustainability and success of the company.”

Bernard Matthews said it is beginning a consultation process over the cuts from its workforce of more than 2,500.
