Berry Gardens managing director, Nick Marston, said: “We have seen very strong consumer demand for Blackberries this season, which has rewarded our growers for their investment in this fruit.

“Our production estimates for this year’s crop is 350 tonnes and, with further investment in planting and maturing plants, this is expected to rise to 1200 tonnes over the next three years,” he added.

The introduction of improved growing and breeding techniques has helped with increased fruit yields and the individual berries have grown in size by roughly 50% in five years, the company said.

“As the most northerly commercial blueberry grower in the world, we are experiencing an earlier than expected crop. The bulk of our harvest will begin September and we predict very good yields through to the end of October,” said Ross Mitchell of Castleton Farm from Laurencekirk, Scotland.
