Burton’s Foods, the UK’s second-largest biscuit supplier, is ending production at one of its sites, a move that could lead to the loss of 660 jobs.

The company, which produces brands including Maryland Cookies and Wagon Wheels, said the planned move at its site on The Wirral follows an “extensive” review of the business.

Chief executive Paul Kitchener said: “We operate in a highly competitive environment against a backdrop of overcapacity in the UK biscuit market. A streamlined and more flexible manufacturing capability is essential to allow the business to capitalise on growth opportunities.”

Burton’s aims to keep 300 jobs at the site as it continues to produce chocolate and seasonal confectionery at the factory.

Burton’s, formed in 2000 following the merger of biscuit producer Horizon and Burton’s Gold Medal Biscuits, is owned by private equity group Duke Street Capital.
