UK confectionery and soft drinks firm Cadbury Schweppes has said it may put diet advice on its UK product labels amid increasing concern about rising child obesity levels.

The company said it had not decided exactly what the labels would say but that it would not take the form of a warning.

“It is true we are looking at a number of options to provide better labelling for the consumer in terms of understanding what a balanced diet is,” a spokeswoman for the company told Reuters.

Cadbury’s announcement followed a call by The Lancet medical journal for a ban on the celebrity endorsement of unhealthy food, and a warning by British health experts that obesity is a time bomb waiting to explode.
