UK grocer Waitrose has secured its latest overseas listing in Chile with a deal with local retailer Unimarc.
Waitrose will sell over 40 products through more than 100 Unimarc stores. The upmarket UK retailer will supply products like Earl Grey tea but also European lines like penne pasta. Half the items will be sold under Waitrose’s Essential own label.
The agreement marks the first South American deal for Waitrose, which sells products through local retailers in over 40 countries.
“South America, in particular Chile, has a growing economy and we were approached by Unimarc to help meet the demand for more cosmopolitan flavours among their customers,” David Morton, Waitrose’s business-to-business director, said.
Waitrose said its international sales jumped 20% year-on-year in the 12 months to the end of January. It is opening up new markets; last month, it signed a deal to sell its groceries in the Philippines, Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands for the first time.
The retailer’s overseas presence also includes nine stores in the Middle East through a venture with Dubai-based Fine Fare Food Market.
