UK retailer The Co-operative Group has converted the packaging of its own-brand standard olive oil range from glass to plastic.
The Co-op sells 1.6m bottles of olive oil per annum, and the move from glass to plastic (PET) will save 90% in packaging weight every year – 566 tonnes – the company said.
Iain Ferguson, environment manager at The Co-operative Food, said: “The Co-operative is committed to making changes that will help preserve the environment, and packaging reduction is a significant factor. The packaging reduction move for olive oil reflects The Co-operative’s Food Ethical Policy – launched in 2008 – which was based on the world’s largest consumer poll on ethics. Over 100,000 members and customers said action to safeguard the environment was one of their top priorities.”
The retailer has made other recent packaging moves to lightweight glass amongst its beer and wine ranges.
