UK-based grocer the Co-operative Group has today (12 April) announced a “major recruitment drive” to find 1,000 staff for a new regional distribution centre in Andover.

The retailer announced today that it is seeking staff for the 467,000 square foot, multi-temperature regional distribution centre based at the Andover Commercial Park in Hampshire.

The group has invested some GBP28m (US$45.6m) in developing the centre, which is set to launch in June this year and will service more than 400 stores across southern England.

It has awarded logistics company Norbert Dentressangle the contract to run transport operations from the site while warehouse operations will be handled internally.

Commenting on the move, the Co-op’s regional head of logistics, Mark Leonard said: “The Co-operative Group’s food business has significantly grown in recent years and our logistics operation has undergone a major overhaul to develop accordingly. This investment will help us to continue to provide high standards of service to our customers, while also allowing for further growth.”

The retailer is seeking some 550 warehouse operatives, 300 drivers and around 150 admin and management staff to work at the centre.
