The Contimix system from Record Pelkman has been awarded the Certificate of Merit at the PPMA (Processing & Packaging Machinery Association) 2001 awards in London in September. Contimix, designed and manufactured by Simon Frères of France, was classed as ‘Commended’ in the Design and Manufacture (Overseas Supplier) category, which recognises  innovative machinery designs or applications manufactured outside the UK.

The award was announced and presented at the annual dinner on September 26th, coinciding with the PPMA show at London’s Excel centre.

“We are delighted that the industry has recognised the qualities of Contimix”, said Mrs Jenny Baxter of Record Pelkman, sole distributors in the UK for the Simon range.  “We added it to our product portfolio because we recognised how exceptionally flexible it is. “

Contimix gains this flexibility because it is manufactured around a modular design that can be adapted to suit any food manufacturer’s requirements.  A continuous mixer system based on a double screw principle, it was originally designed primarily for use with pasty-type products, though it has proved equally effective with a wide range of bread doughs and other mixes.

Pelkman conducted tests of the Simon mixer to check its ability with different ‘UK-style’ mixes.  The system coped easily with a variety of recipes, ranging from cake icing through soft biscuit dough to Christmas cake batter.  In each case, the mixer produced to the required consistency and homogeneity, without damaging ingredients that are more delicate, such as the fruit in Christmas cake recipes.

Contimix’s versatility makes it suitable for a huge variety of mixes, including dairy products, desserts, bakery goods including biscuits and bread doughs, convenience foods and confectionery products.  It can also be used for gentle blending of delicate ingredients such as mushrooms, ham cubes, shrimps or candied fruit.

Contimix is offering numerous other benefits to UK food manufacturers, including the product always being fresh, a reduction in the number of operators, increasing the consistency of product, increasing line capacity, and decreasing the amount of scrap. This has all resulted in significant production cost savings, a benefit that was not originally foreseen and emerged only from manufacturer’s production experience.
