Dairy Crest, the UK’s largest dairy products maker, has reportedly indicated that it wants to re-enter the country’s yoghurt sector.

CEO Mark Allen told The Financial Times that Dairy Crest, which operated in the UK’s yoghurt category through a venture with Yoplait until 2009, wanted to move back into the business.

“We want to develop a yoghurt business over time – that means developing a brand or going out and acquiring one,” Allen told the FT.

In March 2009, Dairy Crest sold a minority stake in its UK yoghurt venture with Yoplait. The sale of the 49% stake ended a venture first set up in 1991.

At the time, Allen said the sale – made in a deal worth GBP63.5m (US$102.8m) – earned Dairy Crest a one-off profit of GBP50m and gave it more breathing room financially.

Dairy Crest continued to distribute Yoplait brands – including Petits Filous and Frubes – for a year.
