UK dairy group Dairy Crest has formed a joint venture with its supplier group, Dairy Crest Direct (DCD), with the aim of promoting increased on-farm efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.

The initiative, dubbed Agri assist, will launch a tool accredited to the Carbon Trust to help farmers measure their carbon output and identify ways to cut emissions and improve efficiency.

The venture will also look to exploit collaborative group purchasing opportunities, building on an electricity buying group set up through DCD.

“The creation of Agri assist will allow us to explore the merits of new technology and the potential economies of scale arising from our direct supply pool,” Dairy Crest milk procurement director Mark Taylor said.

“Agri assist is an exciting venture that will enable us to explore emerging opportunities that could bring real benefit to a farm business,” DCD chairman David Herdman added.
