The UK’s Food and Farming Minister Lord Whitty is to launch the latest phase of a public awareness campaign by the Department for Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) about personal food imports.

The aim of the overall campaign is to raise awareness of the rules on bringing food into the UK from countries outside the EU.

“Controls on food imports are essential to protect public health and the government is committed to reducing the risks of disease entering the food chain via illegally imported food products,” said Defra.

Measures to raise public awareness and improve preventative measures at the UK border and inland are backed by £25m (US$45.2m) from 2003-06.
