GPs have warned UK women that copying the food elimination diets of celebrities could be putting their health at risk.
The fad diets, much publicised by stars such as Geri Halliwell and Jennifer Anniston, generally involve eliminating certain foods such as carbohydrates, dairy products or fat.
In a survey of 205 British GPs, conducted in June by Medix UK on behalf of the industry-funded Grain Information Service, 90% said that they believed women are putting their health at risk by adopting unhealthy eating patterns without medical or qualified nutritional advice.
The doctors said that self-imposed diets could cause problems such as nutrient deficiency, osteoporosis and immune problems.
