efoodmanager, Europe’s leading B2B trading and e-market-place for the food industry, today announced the formation of a strategic alliance with INTERSHOP. As a leading global vendor of enterprise-wide e-commerce applications and solutions, INTERSHOP’s “enfinity” software has been selected as the development environment for all future efoodmanager food platforms.

Through INTERSHOP’s enfinity technology, efoodmanager is setting up a complete range of business-to-business “Open Marketplaces” and “Individual Marketplaces” for specific businesses supported by complementary services and products — for all categories of the European food and beverages industry. The site efoodmanager.com, which promises significant savings on cost and time for food-related industries, is scheduled to launch at the end of May.

Strategic Targets of the Alliance

The goal of the strategic alliance between efoodmanager and INTERSHOP is to leverage both companies` special expertise — INTERSHOP and efoodmanager jointly developing new, innovative B2B applications for the food industry as well as providing bilateral support in consulting, acquisition, and sales. Expert teams from INTERSHOP, comprising project managers and consultants, programmers and web designers will collaborate with efoodmanager experts from its individual food categories as well as its B2B e-commerce, logistics, and financial services professionals.

“Together we will succeed in opening up the food industry worldwide in the B2B sector. And, we will specifically develop branch-oriented tools and multiple e-marketplaces,” explains Jan Stenger, founder and CEO of efoodmanager. “The general B2C and B2B software expertise of INTERSHOP and the vertical B2B domain and e-commerce expertise of efoodmanager in foodstuffs, financial services and logistics will be put to work effectively.”

The INTERSHOP founder and CEO Stephan Schambach said: “enfinity, thanks to its modular construction is able to build up marketplaces in the Internet, on which existing business processes can be depicted. With trading via efoodmanager, the food business can achieve considerable savings in cost and time.”

For efoodmanager, this alliance means that a sophisticated e-commerce system will be set up together with INTERSHOP, providing an extremely complex and safe technological backbone that has the required flexibility and integration functionality to quickly respond to market developments.

efoodmanager currently employs a staff of 40 from the food, logistics, financial services, e-commerce, multimedia and management consulting sectors. The firm has offices in Duesseldorf, Valencia, Austin (Texas), New York, Cesena, London and soon in Paris.

The efoodmanager.com business system

The site will be divided into three main areas: the Open Market where buyers and sellers can trade amongst themselves; Individual Marketplaces built and designed by efoodmanager.com for food companies where companies can trade only with pre-selected parties, and the Services area where buyers and sellers can take advantage of the logistics, packaging, insurance, financial services, information, business directories and food produce directories managed by efoodmanager. As part of the Open market there will be the Auction area where members can auction off unsold or highly demanded produce or products.

Initially five product categories will be tradable on efoodmanager: fish, meat, fruits, vegetables and dairy — these categories being scheduled to go online at the end of May. In a second step, pasta, beverages, sweets and commodity products will be added.

Focusing on the procurement needs of supermarket chains, food e-tailers, producers and bulk buyers — as well as the selling needs of suppliers and traders, including the inter-trading between traders — efoodmanager expects to capture 10% of the European’s online trading activity by 2003.

Initially free to join, 250 businesses already handle their daily buying and selling business on efoodmanager’s Individual Marketplaces.
