The European Commission has announced the launch of a technology platform on global animal health.

The technology platform, launched at a conference on animal diseases in Brussels, is a partnership led by industry and supported by Development Commissioner Louis Michel, Science and Research Commissioner Janez Potocnik and Health and Consumer Protection Commissioner Markos Kyprianou. The initiative is being set up to tackle major animal diseases in the developing world and in Europe.

“Tackling animal diseases effectively benefits society as a whole, creating significant economic, social, environmental and ethical gains. The Global Technology Platform for Animal Health is an industry driven initiative which will create a partnership covering the whole chain, from innovation to delivery of new vaccines and tests. The platform will contribute to improving animal health and welfare, food safety, human health and market access, particularly by developing countries,” said Kyprianou.
