The Fairtrade Foundation has identified the bakery category as offering room for growth for certified products.
“We are looking for growth in as many areas as we can and we believe there are significant opportunities for growth in the bakery category,” a spokesperson for the Foundation told just-food.
“By this we usually mean baked products – cakes, muffins, cookies – with a medium rather than a short shelf-life. Because of the high content of cocoa, dried fruit and sugar these finished products can carry the fairtrade symbol.”
Awareness of fairtrade certification in the UK has risen to 70%, according to the latest data published by the Foundation.
