UK safety watchdog the Food Standards Agency (FSA) is in a row with government ministers over its failure to promote organic food and farming.
Minister for the Environment Michael Meacher is reported to have written to the chairman of the FSA Professor Sir John Krebs asking for an explanation regarding the lack of an FSA statement endorsing the environmental benefits of organic food.
Meacher was quoted as saying by the Independent on Sunday: “I am very surprised that Sir John finds it so difficult to come forward with a view on organic farming that so many other prestigious and authoritative voices have endorsed so warmly and forcefully.”
UK organic certifier The Soil Association has ceased talks with the FSA until it is satisfied that the FSA is looking at organic food and farming with an open mind.
