Glanbia Fresh Meats UK, a division of Irish food company Glanbia, plans to shut down its Drongan facility in Ayrshire due to a fall in pig numbers.

If the closure goes ahead, some 120 workers would be made redundant.

“It has become increasingly difficult to justify the operation of two centrally packed meat plants with the intense competition and overcapacity within the industry,” Glanbia Fresh Meats chief executive Malcom Longley was quoted by Farmer’s Weekly as saying.

Longley also said that the surprise 15% downturn in pig numbers since December had also led the company to review its operations.
