Golden Cross Cheese has recalled a batch of its Flower Marie Unpasteurised Soft Mould Ripened Cheese due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

The Food Standards Agency issue an alert following the recall, which Golden Cross told just-food was picked up as part of the company’s routine testing.

Listeria is a bacterium that can cause food poisoning. The company has undertaken a product recall and will be displaying point-of-sale notices in stores that sell the cheese to explain why the product has been recalled.

“There have been no illnesses reported and it is a very low level of contamination that was found,” said a spokesperson for Golden Cross. “We have been producing cheese for 16 years and this is the first time it has happened.”

Anyone who has bought the cheese, which has a “used by” date of 18 April, are being urged to return it to the store for a refund.
