The Government today issued its response to the Milk Task Force report published on 3 January 2002. The aims of the Task Force were to identify how greater efficiencies could be obtained throughout the dairy supply chain.

Lord Whitty, minister for food and farming said: “The Task Force has made a number of carefully thought out recommendations for the dairy sector and for Government.


“Government generally welcomes and supports these recommendations. In many cases they are already reflected in Government’s current policy on the dairy sector.”


“Government is keen to play its part in taking forward the work of the Milk Task Force. I am sure those in the dairy sector will also give their full consideration to how they too can address the issues directly affecting them.”


The major theme of the Milk Taskforce report is the need for greater co-operation and communication between participants in the dairy supply chain across a number of areas including:

– the promotion of milk and milk products;
– the collection and distribution of milk;

The report also identifies a number of areas where the Government could help the sector become more efficient, such as:


– simplifying the administration of milk quotas;
– the direction of CAP reform;
– the provision of data to aid benchmarking;
– accurate labelling of dairy products, and
– the administration of grant schemes.


Some of these issues were also identified by the Policy Commission on the Future of Farming and Food and for others the Government is already considering action. The Government has been able to respond positively to almost all the Task Force’s recommendations for Government.
