Over two thousand workers at the Grampian Country Food Group are poised to take strike action over pay, pensions and parity.

The Transport and General Workers union told just-food today (30 March) that 57% of its members at the food group have backed the 24-hour strike, scheduled for 5 April. “The vote to strike reflects the dissatisfaction Grampian workers feel with managements failure to enter into meaningful negotiations over pay freezes, pension cuts and the increased casualisation of the workforce,” a spokesperson for the T&G said.

According to Chris Kaufman, T&G national secretary for food and agriculture, the strike vote was a consequence of a national policy of pay freezes, which had already provoked localised strikes in Wales, a planned 10% cut to pension benefits and concern that agency staff used across the company were being treated differently to permanent staff.

“Grampian is worth many millions but it will only cost them three million to settle this dispute,” Kaufman said.

Grampian supplies the big four supermarkets, Tesco, Sainsbury, Asda and Morrisons, as well as Marks and Spencer with various poultry and pork products. The company was unavailable for comment at time of press.
