US food group HJ Heinz has confirmed that it is to close its HP Sauce factory in Birmingham.

The factory is to close in March, resulting in the loss of 120 jobs. Heinz plans to move production of the sauce brand to the Netherlands.

The decision comes in spite of a long-fought battle involving employees, union representatives and local MPs. The company said the move was a “difficult but necessary decision”.

Heinz said the closure would save the company around GBP25m over the next ten years, but John Jordan, acting national secretary of the T&G union, condemned the decision as a case of “corporate greed”.
