Fresh on the heels of an announcement hailing its rescue package and imminent return to profitability, Kwik Save chairman and CEO Paul Niklas today (26 March) confirmed leaked information that the convenience group is planning large-scale cuts to its UK workforce.
A Kwik Save insider told just-food over the weekend that the retailer was pushing through mass staff redundancies this week in a ‘last in, first out’ basis. “Store managers have been told to brief all staff on Monday, complete first consultations straight after, second consultations on Thursday and ‘sack’ these staff on Friday,” the source said.
“The new management of Kwik Save has had to make this difficult decision to secure the future of the company and safeguard the jobs of the majority of staff. It is with sincere regret that we have had to make these redundancies, however we are determined to make Kwik Save a successful business for the future,” Niklas revealed in an emailed statement.
However, the source claimed that management’s plans to rejuvenate Kwik Save are little more than empty promises and PR activity, with shelves remaining empty.
“The latest plan to ‘save’ the company is to have a relaunch next week (28th March) declaring “We Are Back!” This is a total joke… stores are still empty – echoing from wall to wall.”
