Tesco’s market share actually slipped in the 12 weeks ended 11 September 2005, but the year on year growth of Britain’s biggest supermarket continues at 11% according to the latest TNS Superpanel.
Figures for the latest 12 week put Tesco’s market share at 30.3%, off its all time high of 30.5%, but up from the 28.0% Tesco attained at the same time last year.
Superpanel Communications Director Edward Garner also pointed out that the figures show a continued recovery at Sainsbury with growth of 5% out-pacing the market and the share lifting to 15.7% – up from 15.3% a year ago.
For the third period running Asda have lifted their share from the low point of 16.4% (seen in June) up to 16.9% now, he said. This is as a result of their renewed concentration on price and promotional activity in a ferociously competitive market place.
The combined Morrisons / Safeway share continues to show year-on year decline but as the last vestiges of the Safeway fascia disappear we are starting to see signs of stability – the share is unchanged from the previous period and this means that the likely ongoing share is likely to be around 11%.
