Scottish crisp producer Mackie’s at Taypack is to transfer production to a new site that it claims will double capacity.

The new plant in Errol in Perthshire is 60% larger than the current unit five miles north in Moncur. Mackie’s said production will more than double from 96,000 to 201,000 bags a shift.

The move will take place in August and Mackie’s, which employs around 30 staff, said the increase in production will also create an unspecified number of new jobs, The project, which is costing a seven-figure sum, has received public funding, it added.

Mackie’s has listings with all major retailers in Scotland. Asda recently launched three varieties of its crisps across 70 stores in England and Northern Ireland.

The company also exports to around 20 countries including Canada, the US, Australia and Singapore.

The company says manufacturing capacity is expanding following a period of “exceptionally strong” sales within home and export markets. Turnover is projected to rise to GBP4.6m (US$7.1m) this year from GBP3.1m in 2012.
