Scotland’s Macrae Food Group moved yesterday to save 770 jobs by buying two processing plants from the beleaguered Fisher Foods portfolio.
Two fish processing plants in Fraserburgh and Peterhead were bought by Macrae for an undisclosed sum, although their new owner pledged to invest some £5m (US$7.7m) into rejuvenating the business.
According to the Scottish Daily Record, the Fraserburgh factory has 712 staff processing seafood, kippers, haddock and mackerel while 67 work at Peterhead. Staff at the two plants have been on tenterhooks for almost three months since Fisher collapsed under debts amounting to over £100m.
Bill Hazeldean, chief executive of Peterhead-based Macrae, said: “If we can create a centre of excellence with a highly skilled and motivated staff we have a very good opportunity to grow the business substantially.”
