Mars has teamed up with a UK government-backed environment initiative to revamp the packaging for its Uncle Ben’s brand.

Mars has reduced the weight of its Uncle Ben’s ambient sauce jars, a move that could save the company 450 tonnes of glass a year.

The tie-up with WRAP, the Waste & Resources Action Programme, is designed to reduce packaging in a bid to reduce Mars’ carbon emissions.

Nicola Jenkin, from WRAP’s retail team, said: “If other companies in the food and drink sector pursue similar innovations in the lightweighting of glass containers it will deliver major environmental and supply chain benefits.”

Frieda Sporen, Mars’ packaging innovations manager, added: “The new jar can be manufactured smoothly on our existing production lines.”
