Masterfoods UK is consulting with the Environment Agency in an attempt to escape fines after failing to submit two compulsory emissions reports.
The company has failed to submit yearly reports into emissions for one of its factories due 30 March, and a number of CO2 allowances due 30 April – in the first year it has been required to do so by the EU European Emissions Trading Scheme.
A spokesperson for the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) confirmed that the Mars Inc subsidiary could face a fine of EUR40 (US$51.3) for each metric ton of CO2 not covered by a CO2 allowance.
Steel company Alphasteel also missed the two deadlines, while the MOD and Scandstick UK failed to submit its emissions report only.
