McCain Foods has sold its Dansco mozzarella plant to Hebatco International in a multi million pound deal.

The Welsh plant at Newcastle Emlyn produces about 15,000 tonnes of block and shredded mozzarella cheese each year; primarily for use as a pizza topping. It was acquired by McCain in 1988 from Dairy Crest, but McCain says prospects for Dansco and its employees will now be better served by allowing the company to become part of a larger dairy group.

Hebatco International has operations in London and Kuwait. It is thought to have paid more than £12m (US$18.7m) for Dansco as part of its strategy to establish a strong food manufacturing base in the UK.
