McCain Foods looks set to axe around half the jobs at a key production site in the UK.

Some 120 jobs at McCain’s site in Wombourne are under threat as the company plans to scale back production at the facility.

Nick Vermont, who heads McCain’s UK business, pointed to “local environmental constraints” for causing “serious operational difficulties” at the site.

Vermont added: “As a result, French Fry production at Wombourne is no longer economically viable. Under the proposal the site will now focus on the preparation of our potato speciality products, with French Fry production moving to other better suited sites in the UK.”

McCain insists the company remains “absolutely committed” to the Wombourne site, which currently employs around 240 people.
