Morrisons’ new chief executive Dalton Philips has made his first senior appointment at the UK retailer with the hiring of Waitrose executive Richard Hodgson as commercial director.

The UK’s fourth-largest grocer announced the appointment of Hodgson this morning (8 June) as Phillips looks to build an executive team after joining the business in March.

Hodgson joined Waitrose in 2006 after ten years at Asda, the UK arm of Wal-Mart.

The 40-year-old joined Waitrose as director of buying and became commercial director in 2008.

Philips said he was “delighted” at Hodgson joining Morrisons. “He brings wide experience from all areas of the UK grocery market and has made a big impact in all of his senior roles.”

Meanwhile, Morrisons trading director Martyn Jones is to move to a new role of group corporate services director, which includes corporate responsibility and food safety.
