UK retailer Morrisons is to invest GBP6.4m (US$10m) in its its Farmers Boy Deeside fresh meat plant in North Wales, which it says will create around 90 jobs.

The plant currently provides the supermarket with branded sliced meats and deli products. The investment, which is being backed by the Welsh Government, will enable the retailer to also produce an “extensive” range of ready-to-eat chicken meals at the facility for all 477 stores across the UK.

The project will involve investment in equipment and machinery, upgrading some facilities and a re-configuration of the factory floor to accommodate new food lines and staff.

The Welsh Government has supported the expansion with GBP635,000 through the Economic Growth Fund which is designed to fast track investment projects with the potential to create jobs and stimulate the economy.

This is the second investment in the 175,000 sq ft plant in the last 12 months. The investment last year saw staff numbers double from 300 to 600. It is Morrisons’ first manufacturing venture in Wales.
