According to data from TNS Superpanel, the combined market share of the Morrisons and Safeway chains was 13.2% for the 12 weeks to 7 November, compared to 13.4% a month earlier and 14.8% in the same period of last year, reported Reuters. Some of the decline is due to store disposals, but analysts are still waiting for Morrison to turn around the performance of the chain it acquired in March this year.

Safeway’s market share declined to 5.8% for the 12 weeks to 7 November, compared to 6.3% a month earlier and 8.8% in the year-ago period. However, Morrisons stores’ market share rose to 7.4% from 7.1% a month earlier and 6.0% in the year-ago period.

Market leader Tesco, meanwhile, continued to push ahead, growing its market share to 28.3%, from 28.1% a month earlier and 26.5% in the corresponding period of last year.

Struggling supermarket chain Sainsbury’s continued to show signs of a recovery with market share of 15.5% in the 12 weeks to 7 November, compared to 15.4% a month earlier. Its market share was 15.8% in the year-ago period.
