Morrisons has become the latest company to offer backing to England’s bid to host the football World Cup in 2018.

The UK retailer has joined British Telecom and accountantcy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers as a major partner for the bid.

Mark Gunter, group retail director at Morrisons, said: “We’re sure that our customers would be delighted if the World Cup came to England in 2018 and by becoming a commercial partner we can help them to play their part in supporting the bid.”

The retailer is looking to collect the signatures of two million customers to back England’s bid. FIFA, football’s global governing body, will decide in December which country will host the 2018 tournament.

England is up against the likes of Australia and Russia, as well as joint bids lodged by Belgium and the Netherlands and Portugal and Spain.
