UK food and clothing retailer Marks & Spencer has reported a 0.4% slide in total sales for the 15 weeks to 10 January, compared to the year-ago period.
On a like-for-like basis, sales fell 2.5%. Food sales rose 4.7%, or 0.7% on a like-for-like basis.
For the seven-week Christmas period ending 10 January, total sales slid 0.1%, while food sales rose 4.7%. Food sales edged up 0.5% on a like-for-like basis for the seven-week period.
“Food performance was adequate and we held market share over the period. We opened 22 Simply Food and Food stores, adding c.100,000 square feet of new Food space over the quarter. Overall these formats are performing in line with our plans and we are pleased these stores are attracting new customers,” CEO Roger Holmes said.
