UK retailer Marks and Spencer today (12 September) revealed its new-look food halls, part of a GBP600m (US$948m) upgrade of its stores.

Chief executive Marc Bolland indicated in May that M&S would look to freshen up its stores and the company showcased its changes at an outlet in High Street Kensington in London.

The changes, to be piloted at 14 stores, include deli counters and a new-look bakery department.

M&S also displayed 100 international brands it said in July it would sell on an exclusive basis as part of a move to reposition itself as more of a food specialist.

The retailer had invested in upgrading its stores under former chief executive Sir Stuart Rose. However, when Bolland said in May that the company would look to revitalise its outlets, he said the previous modernisation programme had not delivered an inspirational shopping environment”.
