UK conservation group The National Trust has announced that the lamb it sells direct from its Hafod-y-Llan farm on the south slopes of Snowdon will now be available for delivery in a new eco-friendly box.
The organisation said its new delivery box uses both recycled and biodegradable packaging together with reusable wool insulation.
“A mixture of washed Welsh Mountain, Herdwick, and Swaledale fleece has replaced polystyrene as a more effective and environmentally friendly way to package lamb for delivery from Hafod-y-Llan,” the National Trust said.
The Welsh lamb box scheme was launched in 2001 as a means for consumers to buy lamb direct from the Welsh mountains of the Snowdonia National Park. Lamb for the box scheme comes from Hafod-y-Llan and local National Trust tenant farms and is reared to RSPCA Freedom Food standards.
“We found that using wool insulation provided the best solution in terms of keeping the lamb at the correct temperature during delivery and it’s a material that can be re-cycled – a list of handy hints for how to re-use the wool is included in the box,” said Trystan Edwards, the National Trust’s Farming and Countryside Adviser for North Wales.
