Nocton Dairies has withdrawn a planning application to build the UK’s largest “super dairy”.
The company said that the facility would have housed 3,770 cattle in Nocton Heath, Lincs. However, a spokesperson for the group revealed, the group’s plans had met with opposition from the Environment Agency.
“The Environment Agency was concerned about the change in land use and so we decided to drop the proposal,” the spokesperson said.
According to the company, the agency’s “precautionary stance” and requests for further information demonstrated and “unfamiliarity” with agriculture and the workings of a modern dairy.
“Despite our best efforts to address these concerns, including an additional investment of GBP4m (US$6.5m) in engineering the management of the waste to unprecedented standards, lack of relevant research has made it impossible to provide the reassurances required by the Environment Agency that livestock farming is an appropriate use of land at this site.”
