Northern Foods will delay its decision on which location will be chosen for a new ‘super site’ for its Fox’s biscuit brand until early next year.
A decision was expected this month but Fox’s management have said that “due to the current economic climate”, it does not want to make a decision on a new super site for at least another year.
Two sites are being considered – Uttoxeter in Staffordshire and Baxley, Yorkshire.
Last month, staff at Fox’s Uttoxeter plant demonstrated their desire for the contract by marching though the streets.
Claire Boot, Unite convenor, said: “Initially, workers felt very let down by the decision. It means another year of anxiety and uncertainty, which is a poor reward for a dedicated workforce.
“Obviously we are hugely disappointed but after calming down we realise that there is now another year of work at the very least, and another year to fight to be chosen as the ‘supersite’.
Unite said that over 800 jobs hang on the decision.
