Northern Foods is considering closing its Leeds office and moving the majority of the staff to a shared service centre in Wakefield.

The UK food group is also proposing to move legal and company secretarial functions to Birmingham, a move which “regrettably places a small number of employees at risk of redundancy,” a spokesperson said today (19 May).

Northern said that, following its sale to Boparan Holdings, it and Boparan’s poultry arm 2 Sisters Food Group have looked at the most appropriate location for their central functions. The two companies are proposing to relocate the finance and communications teams to Wakefield, where they will sit alongside other central functions including IT, HR and health and safety.

Northern, which owns brands including Goodfella’s pizza and Fox’s biscuits, said its Thorpe Park office in Leeds is “under-utilised” with only one fully occupied floor and fewer than 30 employees based at the site. Northern said it has, in recent years, moved much of the work to other locations, principally the Wakefield site.

“Whilst today’s announcement regrettably brings uncertainty for some, it is a necessary part of integrating Northern Foods and 2 Sisters to ensure we make the most effective use of the office locations we have,” the spokesperson said.
