According to report in The Mail on Sunday, Northern Foods is close to selling its transportation operations in an effort to refocus its business. However, a spokesperson from the company told just-food, such a decision would be delivered as part of the company’s previously announced strategic review.

Last month the supplier of private label products for leading supermarkets warned that profits for the 2005-6 financial year are expected to decline 28% to GBP45m. At the same time as it issued the profit warning, Northern Foods said that it would conduct a strategic review of its business.

Citing sources familiar with the situation, the UK weekly reported that the company has already lined up the sale of its NFT Distribution unit, which distributes Northern Foods’ own products along with providing transportation for other food companies.

Hilary Baker, director of communications at Northern Foods, declined to confirm the report, stating: “We’ve said that we are conducting a strategic review, but have not yet revealed its outcome.”
