Onken Dairy (UK) has made its first foray into the competitive single-serve yoghurt sector in the UK with the launch of Biowild, a new range of low-fat bio yoghurts which combine fruit with natural plants, herbs and flower extracts.
All the products in the range, regardless of their added ingredients, carry the general claim that they can help contribute to “overall well being.” Single-serve yoghurts currently make up 42% of the total UK yoghurt market, according to AC Neilsen data published in August 2002.
Biowild comes in a 175g pot and six varieties are available, with some unusual combinations: Peach & Lemon Balm; Plum & Hop; Apple & Hawthorn; Pear, Rosehip & Marigold; Blueberry, Elderberry & Passion Flower; and BlackBerry, Elderberry & Lavender.
The products feature an outer recyclable sleeve, which can be unwrapped to reveal an explanation of the usage of each plant. For example, the Peach & Lemon Balm flavour provides a history of the use of lemon balm, including a quote from the London Dispensary in 1696 that says the herb, “given every morning, will renew youth, strengthen the brain and relieve languishing nature.”
These taste combinations are a key element in the Onken’s strategy for the line and help to differentiate it in the marketplace, according to the company.
