UK organic food makers are set to detail their plans (22 September) to grow organic sales in the country by 50% by 2015 tomorrow at its ‘Go for Growth’ conference in London.


UK organic industry body the Organic Trade Board has drawn up an ambitious plan to expand the organic market by GBP1bn (US$1.62bn) to GBP3.1bn over the next six years.


The scheme, which is backed by the likes of dairy firms Rachel’s Organic and Yeo Valley, as well as chocolate maker Green & Black’s, has identified a number of ways in which the organic sector in the UK could grow after months of flagging sales. Better communication with consumers and retailers and moves to “embrace” the diversity of organic food have been mooted.


“The need to get the organic message across to consumers is always quoted as the biggest barrier to sales growth and with this initiative, we have the opportunity to speak with one voice and engage in a plan designed to grow the market and spread the positive benefits of organic produce,” said Huw Bowles, chair of the Organic Trade Board and COO of organic dairy co-operative Omsco.
